Mattresses are sold separately, and there's a comprehensive range available. All are designed to suit your baby's needs; it's just a case of which you prefer. Visit
www.mothercare.com or see our catalogue for more information about the different types of mattresses available. Some, such as the Amicor, come with anti-allergy properties, and the covers on the Coolmax fresh FX can be removed and washed at 60°C to kill dustmites.
Make sure that whatever you choose is a good fit - there should be no more than a 3cm gap between mattress and cot around the perimeter. Removable, washable covers are a good idea (only available with Coolmax ® fresh FX mattresses). Even if you’ve inherited a cot or bought one second-hand,you should invest in a new mattress. As well as being more hygienic, it will ensure your baby has the proper, firm support her growing body needs.
Look for sheets in soft, natural
fibres (all Mothercare sheets are
100% cotton).and you may
want to invest in a waterproof
mattress protector, too. Choose
lightweight blankets either in pretty colours to complement
your nursery or, If you like the
co-ordinated look, there are lots
of matching bedding sets to
choose from. Your baby’s
bedding will need to be
changed often, so it’s worth
investing in a few sets to keep
her bed fresh and clean.
Mothercare recommends
• A minimum of 4 fitted
sheets
• 4 flat sheets
• 2-3 blankets
In the summer if it is very warm, your baby may not need any bedding other than a sheet. if it's cooler, remember a folded blanket counts as two blankets. The right bedding is
essential for a safe and comfortable night's sleep- see the
Blanket Guide in our latest catalogue or the nursery bedding
article in the mum-to-be section by

Remember, if your baby is under a year old, don't use a
duvet, quilt, pillow, electric blanket or hot water bottle.
