There's nothing more satisfying
than a sleeping baby. But which
type of cot or crib is right for
your little one?

moses basket

After nine months of being
tucked up in your tummy,
babies like to feel snug and
secure, so a Moses basket
is a good option. They’re
lightweight and portable*,
and don’t take up much space,

so are ideal for when your little one is          Little Circus
sleeping in your room (which experts          Moses basket
recommend for the first six months).

* SAFETY NOTE: Do not move your
moses basket with your baby in it.

Cribs also help your baby feel snug, and encourage good air circulation. Some have a gentle rocking motion and some glide, great for soothing her back to sleep, and they don't take up much space, so again are ideal for when your baby is sleeping in your room. They'll last up to about six months.

cot bed

This looks just like a cot,
but is slightly larger and
converts into a bed when
your little one is ready
(usually around two years
old). The beauty of this
option is that you won’t
have to worry about
buying a new bed until
she is about five
years old.

These can be used from birth, though
you may find your tiny baby looks a bit lost in there at first! Go for one with different mattress height settings so you can lower it as she grows; a drop-side is useful, too. Cots are safe and sturdy, and will last until she’s around two.
Research has shown that the
safest place for your baby to
sleep is in a cot or crib in your
bedroom for the first six months.
There are various theories as to
why this is the case, such as you
being more likely to respond to her needs straight away - but
what is known is that a baby who
sleeps in a separate room is
almost twice as likely to suffer a
cot death than one who shares
her parents’ room. Follow our
five steps to make sure your
baby is always a safe sleeper…
1
Back is best: always put your baby down on her back to sleep, never on her front or side.
If she’s less than six months old and you find she’s rolled over, gently lay her down on her
back again.
2
Feet to foot: always position her with her feet at the foot of the cot to stop her from
wriggling down under the covers.
3
Keep it cool: the ideal temperature for the nursery is 18°C - keep a thermometer next to
where she sleeps, and make sure the cot isn’t near a radiator or in direct sunlight.
4
Settle with a soother: whenever you put them down, either during the day or at night, settle them with a soother (wait until they're a month old if you're breastfeeding, though). But don't worry if it falls out while they are sleeping - or if they won't take it out at all.
5
Not too hot: check she’s not too hot by placing two fingers on her tummy. If she’s sweating
or feels hot to the touch, remove some bedding.
6
Don’t share a bed with your baby especially if you smoke, drink alcohol or take drugs.
You should never leave her alone in your bed, or fall asleep with her on the sofa.
