You’ll be amazed how many outfit changes you can get through in one day, and just how often your washing machine will be running! You may find yourself changing your baby’s clothes each time you change her nappy (not to mention when she’s sick), so it’s essential that clothes can be easily put in the washing machine and tumble dryer. Always use a non-bio washing powder or liquid, and wash everything before you put it on your baby for the first time.

No matter what season your baby is born in, layering is the best way to ensure she’s always at the right temperature. Small babies aren’t very good at regulating their own body temperature, so if she’s dressed in a few different layers (vest and sleepsuit, then cardigan, pramsuit if it’s chilly, with a hat and blanket on top), you can easily peel them on and off as needed. Babies lose a lot of heat through their
heads, so a warm hat for winter is essential, and a blanket or shawl will come in useful in all kinds of ways. It’s a myth that babies need to be wrapped up much more warmly than us – they can actually overheat very quickly, so as
a general guide you should dress her in one more layer than you’re wearing, and hold off on the hat and jacket until just before you head out.

Once you’re getting out of the house more, you’ll want to show your baby off in some cute clothes (but don’t buy too many early on as you’ll no doubt be showered with presents by friends and family!). Look for practical items – trousers with elasticated waists and inside leg poppers for quick nappy changes, and tops with poppers or
an envelope neck. Snowsuits with hoods and feet attached make life easier than
trying to keep track of hats and socks, which have a habit of disappearing – particularly once your baby discovers the delights of removing her own clothes! You’ll also need some socks or booties for when she’s not wearing sleepsuits.

At Mothercare it's the little details that matter...

We use 100% cotton and breathable fabrics. Our bodysuits are designed to go over little heads without stretching out of shape. Embroideries are fully lined and poppers nickel-free to prevent irritation. For babies born early, our speciality premature clothes fold out flat for ease of dressing and to allow access for special care.
Our sleepsuits from nine months are designed with non-slip-soles. All our fabrics can withstand dozens of washes and tumble dries. Sleepsuits have our special Toe Safe®  to prevent loose threads wrapping around tiny toes. To keep little ones scratch-free, sleepsuits up to three months have fold-back scratch mitts.
