second trimester 13-28 weeks

physical symptoms
growing pains
Mid-trimester is the time of rapid growth of your baby, so don't be alarmed if you feel brief aches on the lower sides of your tummy after coughing or getting up quickly. You're feeling muscle and ligaments stretching as your uterus expands. An itchy tummy can become an issue at this stage, so wear loose fitting, comfortable clothes that allow your skin to breathe. If itching continues or becomes a problem, have a chat with your midwife.
skin changes
Scary-looking blue veins accross your chest, darker niples and a dark line, the lenia negra, down the center of your belly are all normal - and temporary - changes you may notice.
digestive trouble
As the hormones relaxin and progesterone work their magic, your digestive system can become sluggish. Heartburn, indigestion, constipation, and piles (haemorrhoids) are common at this point. Eat plenty of fruit and fibre, and see your GP for advice on what you can take during pregnancy.
size doesn't matter
Every one is different, depending on your height, build, posture, whether you carry high or low and your baby's size. Try not to worry if your bump seems massive or tiny compared to others - your midwife is keeping an eye on how your baby is growing.
'pink' toothbrush
PPH ('pesky pregnancy hormones') make your gums more sensitive and can cause problems. Its common to see blood on your toothbrush, but only your dentist can ensure you're not developing an infection. You get free NHS dental treatment - ask your midwife or GP for advice on what benefits you're entitled to.
