first trimester 0-12 weeks

raging hormones
You'll probably notice some mood swings. Huge changes in your hormonal balance are
triggered by conception, so don't feel guilty if you're anxious, weepy or even angry.
physical symptoms
morning sickness
Don't be fooled by the name- nausea, with or without vomiting, can last well beyond lunchtime. Its caused by low blood sugar, so eating and drinking little and often can help. Avoid caffeine and strong smells, and keep a stash of plain biscuits (ginger ones work for many women) by your bed. If vomiting is severe and occurs consistently more than four times a day, see your GP.
acne outbreak
Pregnancy hormones can increase oiliness - resulting in acne. If you've broken out like an adolescent, drink lots of water, cleanse three times a day and use an oil free moisturiser.
need to pee all the time?
Frequent urination troubles may occur in the first trimester. Pressure from your growing uterus as it lies low, near the sensitive (thanks to those pregnancy hormones) bladder, makes you need to go more often. Don't be tempted to drink less as its important to keep you and your baby well hydrated.
too tired for words
Exhaustion can take mums-to-be by surprise. Your metabolism speeds up to support your growing baby and the increased blood supply to your pelvis, while high levels of the hormone progesterone have a sedative effect. Take it easy and sleep as much as you can - your energy levels will pick up soon.
changes
First time mums are especially sensitive to early physical changes as their bodies gear up for milk production, but tender breasts usually settle down after three months. Your bra size can change up to four sizes during pregnancy, so get measured around every six weeks to make sure you're comfortable and supported.
It's best to get properly measured by a trained bra fitter every six
weeks - but you can alse measure yourself with the help of our
handy online guide and video.
