when do I need my first maternity bra?

Increase in breast size is one of the first signs of pregnancy, and many mums-to-be find their breasts can feel swollen from around six weeks. Breasts are supported by ligaments rather than muscle, making them susceptible to hormonal changes, so it’s a good idea to get measured as soon as you know you’re pregnant. Visit your local Mothercare store to get professionally measured by one of our trained staff.

how many bras do I need?

Your bra size can change up to four times during pregnancy, so it’s important to get refitted regularly – we recommend around every six weeks. You probably won’t need more than two maternity (or support) bras in each size, and we have plenty to choose from, including comfy t-shirt bras that create a smooth look under tops and dresses, pretty patterned bras for something nicer. Later on, you’ll need at least three nursing bras (which have clips for easy breastfeeding), but you need to buy these close to your due date, when your fitter will be able to estimate your size once your milk comes in. It’s also a good idea to invest in some sleep bras, which look like cropped tops or lightweight sports bras, and are perfect for comfortable support at night or when doing gentle exercise.
