Mothercare footcare expertise...
Babies' feet are made mostly of soft, pliable cartilage instead of bones. Cartilage can mold to whatever shape it is in, which is why the correct footwear is vital. Mothercare's crawler and first walker shoes are designed especially for healthy foot development. They have a wider, non-restrictive fit to match the shape of baby's fleshy flat foot, secure fasteners so baby doesn't have to curl their toes to keep their shoes on and padded ankle collars to prevent shoes rubbing against ankle bones. Our crawlers also have added toe protection so tiny toes aren't scraped along the floor and our first walkers have slip-resistant soles.
wobbly first steps
The right fit is equally important.During the early years feet grow very quickly and the nerve endings in baby’s feet have yet not developed, so even if they can talk, they can't tell if their shoes are tight. As a guide, you need to check their feet every 2 months and follow our simple 3-point fit test.
1
With your child standing up in their shoes, there should be a thumb’width of space between the end of the longest toe and the front of the shoe. This should be the case for both feet,as feet can often be different sizes.
2
With your fingers check there is no gap between their heel and the shoe.
3
Watch the child walk and check the shoes are not slipping off the back of their heel. You can also view our buying and sizing guide on
