Over the next three months, your baby will
be surprising you with all sorts of new tricks
– learning to sit up and even to crawl. You
can help stimulate her development through
play (and have lots of fun at the same time)
Your baby may be sitting up with support
now, which makes playing easier
(though tummy-time play is still
important). Six months is also a great
age for giggling. Encourage her to laugh
by making sounds and pulling faces for
her to try to copy.
Your baby is beginning to
understand cause and effect.
Invest in toys that make a noise
when she presses a button – or
a simple rattle – to encourage
that connection between her
actions and the noises she hears.
As well as stimulating her increasing
love of sociable games, playing clap
hands with your baby encourages her
hand to eye coordination. Be sure to sing
along to make the game more fun, and
praise her when she claps
successfully.
Your baby may now be making ‘ma-ma’
and ‘da-da’ sounds – and you can
encourage her language development
by talking to her whenever you make eye
contact. Engage with your baby at every
opportunity – as well as helping you
bond, it encourages early talking skills.
Your seven-month-old will be itching to
get mobile, if she’s not already. Stimulate
that desire to move by rolling a ball just
out of her reach while she’s
lying on her tummy.
Watch her stretch to
retrieve it, maybe even
shuffling along in a
belly surf-type crawl.

Hiding behind a muslin cloth then
revealing your face will be a source of
endless amusement – as well as
helping your little one realise you may
be out of sight, but you always
come back.
Musical toys are another great way of
encouraging your baby to chatter, as well
as developing her musicality. Her motor
skills are becoming more finely tuned,
so simple musical instruments are a
safe bet at this stage.
This is the age where babies do lots of
crawling – and you'll be amazed how
quickly she can move! She'll be pulling
herself up to stand
soon, so encourage
her with an activity
centre.

Babies love to see things built up and
knocked down, so invest in a set of
stacking cups, blocks
or rings – they’ll help
her to learn about
different sizes, too.
