how to

top 'n' tail

Newborns don't need bathing every day, as it can dry out their delicate skin. To keep her fresh and clean between baths, try a simple daily top 'n' tail

You’ll need a top ‘n’ tail bowl, with cooled, boiled water for her eyes
and lukewarm water for cleaning everywhere else; a hand towel for
drying; and a fresh nappy and clean clothes. Your newborn’s skin is
very sensitive so there’s no need for soap in the first few weeks.
Get everything ready and within reach, and ensure the room is warm
and calm. Undress your baby on a changing mat, keeping her nappy
on for now.
Using the cooled, boiled water, clean around each eye with separate
cotton wool balls. Next, using the water in the first section of your top
’n’ tail bowl, along with fresh cotton wool for each area, clean her
nose, face, neck and ears (never insert anything into her ears). Then
clean her tummy, underarms and hands.

When you’re done, pat her top half dry and pop a clean vest on to
keep her warm and cosy.
Next take her nappy off and, using plenty of cotton wool balls with the water from the other half of the bowl, wash her bottom. And don’t forget her leg creases. Give her a final pat dry and dress her in a fresh nappy.
As well as being relaxing and fun, baby massage is a
great way to bond with your baby. Studies have shown
that it can help with postnatal depression, and it’s ideal for
dads to do if they’re feeling a bit left out. Use a gentle
massage oil – our All We Know baby oil contains natural
extracts. You shouldn’t massage your baby just before or
after a feed. Simply stroke or rub gently from head to foot
in a circular clockwise motion – there’s no set way to
massage. For expert tips, advice and info, ask your
midwife or health visitor, or see www.iaim.org.uk
