nappy know-how

From how often should you change your baby's nappy, to what you may find in it!
•
On average, newborns need 10 changes a day.
Some babies have sensitive skin and need changing as
soon as they’re wet to avoid nappy rash, while others can
wait longer between changes. You will, however, need to
change your baby after every poo to prevent soreness
(and smells!)
•
If your baby does get nappy rash, try to change wet or dirty
nappies straight away, ensuring you clean and dry her
thoroughly. Nappy-free time will air her skin and
promote healing, and barrier cream can help to soothe
the rash.
•
The contents of your baby’s nappy will change as she
grows.
At first, she’ll pass meconium – a black tar-like
substance. After a day or two, her poos will become lighter
and runnier. Breastfed babies tend to have soft,
yellowish poo; bottlefed babies’ poo is usually darker,
firmer and smellier. Some babies fill their nappies at
every feed, but others can go much longer between bowel
movements.
•
Nappy changing will be a big part of your daily routine, so
keep a set of changing essentials (nappies, wipes,
nappy sacks, changing mat) downstairs as well as in the
nursery, so that you’re not running up and downstairs
all day.
